Tablet Features Don’t Work Out Of Box, September 25, 2017

The tablet feature for fliplock wouldn’t work on 2 brand new ASUS UX360CA laptops. Amazon RMA’d the first laptop and the 2nd laptop came out of box with a failing tablet mode just like the 1st. The problem is that the keyboard/mouse only lock when in portrait mode, but portrait mode only works when the laptop is in a 90 degree position. Move away from 90 degrees and it goes into landscape mode and the keyboard/mouse come back on. If you disable fliplock the tablet and auto rotate features work well, but the keyboard/mouse are on making any use of the tablet worthless.

I contacted ASUS support about a dozen times over 4 weeks and they were useless. Between broken English, not taking notes, and the lack of any direction to try and solve my problem it was extremely bad. Every time I called in and gave the next worker my case number it was like starting the ticket all over again. Support kept pushing me off to an engineering team which had me upgrade a driver I already upgraded. After that one driver upgrade engineering closed my ticket and no one told me. After todays call support told me updating one driver was “exhaustive” and the only other option was to mail the laptop to them for further review. Given this was my 2nd brand new laptop I gave up on ASUS support and returned it. It really angers me because it was a decent laptop, but if tablet mode won’t work then what’s the point of buying a hybrid?

In 19 years of IT work I’ve had some bad support but Asus is king. I will not be buying anything made by ASUS as a direct result of my dealing with their support team.

First off I want to say that this is a solid laptop. However, Asus and Microsoft have some issues to work out with Asus Fliplock. I recently purchased one of these laptops and when I turned it on and tried to use the flip capability it didn’t work. So being a nerdy computer guy that I am I called the manufacturer and started the troubleshooting steps. First off they had me doing all the same things that I had ready tried, like downloading the drivers from their site, trying older drivers, and even resetting the laptop. When all that was done and it still wasn’t working I got with Amazon and had them ship me another one.Well here we go again the second one (side note: they both were sealed and brand new) I turned it on like I did before and WOW, still not working. The only difference on this one is that I didn’t connect it to the internet like I did the first one. Theory on this is that sometimes Microsoft drivers will overwrite the manufacturer drivers that work better. Once again I called Asus and repeated the same things I did before. This time the tech support guy was baffled as to why it wasn’t working. He sent me on to the tier 2 support but said that could take 24 – 48hrs for them to get with me and when they do they can get with Microsoft to fix the driver issue, but they didn’t know how long that was going to take.At this point, I am tired of dealing with a brand new laptop that is supposed to work right away. Now with all that said the laptop itself is very nice and I really find no fault in the manufacture. I have bought and will continue to buy Asus products. I think it is an issue with Microsoft changing something in an update that broke the link between the manufacturer driver and the hardware. That is the reason I gave this three stars, it would have been four but due to the fact that this laptop is a 2 in 1 and that function isn’t working, I took one star off. If though you don’t care about the 2 in1 and want a very thin light weight laptop that is very comparable to the Dell XPS 13, then I would get this one. I did end up going with a Dell Inspiron 7378 and I am very happy with that, it is a bit bigger but still just as nice. Sorry for the lengthy review I just felt like I could help out and keep someone else from going through what I did.

Purchased this is a gift, and she loves it! Very fast boot up, great screen, and she loves the tablet mode, it’s not a gimmick, it’s very useful for her.

All around I would say it’s a great buy for someone that needs more than a tablet but not a full pc (like animators and cad users)
