A Controversial Yet Utterly Brilliant Shooter, December 1, 2015
This review is from: Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege – PC (CD-ROM)
Guys, look. The people leaving one star reviews knew coming into this they wouldn’t like it, point blank. I’m a guy who did play the original Rainbow Six’s, and I wasn’t expecting that. I’ve played and enjoyed COD and Battlefield, and I wasn’t expecting that.
What I WAS expecting is a tense, no bs shooter simulation, and that’s exactly what I got. No shooter in recent memory has gotten my heart pounding quite like this.
All those tense moments that you were wanting for in COD, only to be thwarted by a 360 spinning sniper? They won’t be found here. I was concerned about not having a mic, but so far I’ve only had one lobby that was anything but helpful and cool, everyone’s been cool calm and collected that I’ve played with.
Now for probably the biggest realization I’ve had after playing about 8 hours of multiplayer: I have not once called bs on any of my deaths. Let that sink in for a second. An online shooter that I myself have been solely responsible for all my deaths. Not due to lag, hackers, glitches, nothing. If I died, I screwed up, I can’t blame the game or anyone else.
One last point before I wrap it up. I haven’t lost track of time while playing a game (shooter at that) quite like this since Skyrim. Even during Witcher 3 I was able to keep track of time. I looked up earlier and 3 and a half hours had passed and I was hungry for more. That says a lot in my opinion, again, especially about a shooter.
If you’re looking for disciplined and realistic gunplay, tense close quarters combat, and a game that rewards you for approaching it the same way you would approach a real life situation (provided you had said skills) then this is for you. Like I say in most (if not all) my reviews, if you’re this far into researching it and are actually reading this, you leaning towards this side of the fence anyway. Do yourself a favor and hit the back button and pick up your copy, it’s more than worth it if anything in my review piqued your interest. Thanks for taking the time to read.

CS killer?, December 10, 2015

UPDATE #2:

Since my last update, Ubisoft has released multiple patches addressing many of the network issues. The game now runs much more smoothly. There are still the occasional disconnects and slow matchmaking times, but for the most part, they are pretty rare. Also, some glitches which gave defenders an unfair advantage have been fixed as well. Overall, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Ubisoft’s commitment to this game. Their patches have been either on time or early, and all have made quite a bit of progress. They’ve also been quite transparent about which fixes they’re working on. There is an entire list of known major bugs on the various community sites, with their current status updated by Ubisoft. The first DLC was delayed slightly, but this seems to have been well-received by the community due to the number of more important bug fixes Ubisoft has been prioritizing. Again, all of this is a pleasant surprise, because I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a good experience with what I would consider to be the major publishers.

UPDATE #1:

After playing a pretty good amount of hours over the past week, I feel I need to provide an update to keep my review honest, but I won’t change the score just yet. The main thing that has changed for me is that I’ve now encountered many of the network issues that other users have reported, so whereas before I claimed they were exaggerated, I must now say this game still has a lot of technical issues particularly around networking and servers. It’s most definitely not unplayable though; I’ve seen much worse game launches, and you can get through into a good game soon enough. When I was playing alone or with 1 or 2 other friends in a squad, I had virtually no network issues, which is why I was dismissive of them earlier on.

Since then, a guy I met through the game has been recruiting for a team made up of some of the more serious casual players he’s come across, so I’ve mostly been in squads in 4 or 5 the past few days, and that’s where the problems really started. There are lots of issues with Uplay purchasers not being able to join squads with Steam purchasers and/or vice versa, and the Uplay overlay is pretty much incompatible with things like Steam and TeamSpeak Overlays. Also, there is a known bug supposedly being addressed by Ubisoft in an upcoming patch which connects players in a game to different data centers. I’m not sure if that’s what we’re seeing, but we would frequently see our squad being split up into separate games, or some of our squad mates repeatedly getting connection errors.

The other really annoying class of bugs is with in-game voice chat. The in-game voice messes with the sound in other VOIP programs like TeamSpeak. We figured disabling in-game voice would solve it, but it makes some of us too quiet in TeamSpeak. And then it randomly turns back on and gets stuck on voice-activated even if you set it to push-to-talk, so you constantly have to be dealing with echoing feedback and going into settings to fix it. These bugs are also supposedly known by Ubisoft.

There are also some other networking issues like matchmaking getting stuck, or serious rubber-banding in some servers. However, these are easy enough to bypass by just backing out and trying again, unlike the voice chat, squad-splitting, and overlay issues which don’t seem to have an easy fix other than restarting the game and hoping for the best.

The reason I’m not docking any points is that this is a serious online title that is being stressed by many players at a level that was not practical to test by the developers pre-launch, and even so, it’s still not the worst launch in terms of bugs. Also, Ubisoft seems pretty responsive on their forums and is acknowledging all of the issues and claiming to be working on patching them. If it takes them years to release a minor patch, of course I’ll consider that a broken promise and lower the score accordingly, but it’s still too early to condemn this game when it’s so fun and still quite playable even with a full squad.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I’ve been a fan of shooters for a long time, both offline and multiplayer. My favorites have always been military-style shooters in the vein of Counter-Strike, Battlefield, SOCOM, Rainbow 6, and earlier Call of Duty. My search for a new shooter began after recently purchasing a PS4 and wanting a good shooter for the console. To my surprise, there is a serious lack of good multiplayer shooters on consoles right now. Oh sure, you get a new Call of Duty or Battlefield every year, but as those series’ business models have gotten worse, it seems that the genre has ironically consolidated into those 2. The big competitors at the moment would be Halo (which I can’t play as I don’t have an Xbox One) and Destiny, which is no better in terms of how it treats its loyal customers (note that I’m basically including Battlefront…

If you are a solo player? Look elsewhere., December 1, 2015
This review is from: Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege – PC (CD-ROM)
PROS: If you have a full team of friends? There is no better shooter this year.

CONS: If you don’t? You can’t rely on strangers who may or may not talk to provide an enjoyable experience. If anything this breeds toxic behavior. So if you are a solo focused multiplayer type person. This game is an easy pass.

I have a gaming system and it isn’t for everybody but I find it useful. I expect a dollar an hour for my time invested in any game (yep I have heard all the trolls in regards to the dollar an hour comparisons – so funny kek).
A game like Skyrim? I put in over 300 hours and it is safe to say I made an outstanding purchase even at 150 dollars for the collectors edition at the time. But I have also bought many games where
I lost money on paying triple A price only to manage a handful of hours. Even some indie titles I think five dollars is a great deal on a game I am mildly interested in and then I never play it even though
it is a great deal I lost money.

Enter in RainbowSix: Seige. I have been a fan of these game for years and you can imagine when I found there to be no campaign I was very disappointed. Then I looked at the price tage and scoffed. That much for a non campaign game?
Insane! Typical Ubishit tricks again. But then I looked at it differently because when anyone is overractive they are rarely intelligent. I tried to remember the campaign from the other games and I couldn’t. By saying that I could not remember I mean I couldn’t even remember the smallest detail of any of the other games.
The book I could easily recall but not the stories told in games. Then I started to consider how many other campaigns I beat in other shooters and I could think of very few. When you think about it? Not really a big deal. Yes people have a right
to be disappointed but it certainly isn’t the end of your gaming hobby either.

Then you look at the launch price and many felt it is too high for a multiplayer only game – especially with the season pass. At first I felt the same way but after playing it I can tell you I will easily get the money to time ratio I explained above because I enjoy it.
I compared it to battlefront the ulimate edition. Then I looked at the Black Ops III deluxe edition. Both over 100 dollars, Both with no campaign or a short one and I started to realize it might seem high but it is cheaper than other offerings – outside of Halo which is a
aquired taste and only on one system. And even then it is only 60 dollars in some cases. I just wanted to get those points out of the way. All that matters is how the game is and what it offers.

Believe it or not this could be the best multiplayer shooter of the year with on big IF. You have Halo 5, Battlefront, Call of Duty Black Ops III and then Rainbow Six: Seige. Sadly it does not take a genius to figure out Christmas wise what game people will
probably pick out of that group. It is just not a household names compared to those giants.

But here is the reality. While it might not be able to compare in name. It blows all of those others away as a game. While the others seem like easy choices to make you would be wrong.
This is a real shooter and runs in the same vein as the great shooters in the past and the destructable environment is amazing. Yes battlefront has some of that but nothing like this where it is part of the gameplay and strategy. That is
where this game shines. Another amazing aspect is you really feel incentive to progress in this game. The maps are amazing. The weapons smooth the whole concept is so well done.

I’m as shocked as anyone the start of this year I thought this would be the worst shooter of the year and that you could almost bet on it. While Battlefront or Halo would be the best. Now you could argue Battlefront is the worst and Rainbow Six is
the best. Any fan of multiplayer shooters owes it to themselves to give this game a try but just know this game is unlike other shooters. It is team based. No not a team death match team. Not a zone out a lone wolf it team.
This is a team shooter where you will need to talk with other people. So it is best to have a bunch of friends who want to play this game.

The one down side to this game is just how people are in general. You throw some random stangers together to play a game and you probably won’t get the best results. In fact people who are part of an organized team will probably farm teams like that
for hours on end. So if you are going to invest in the game? Do so with the knowledge you shouldn’t bother if you have no intention wanting to be social. I can’t exactly punish a game that requires teamwork when there are so many other offerings on the market
where you can ignore everything solo or with a friend and have fun.
