… is a shame so many people are having a bad experience with this laptop,
1. I spent a few days struggling with various issues with the machine, but finally solved all but one by performing a clean install of windows 10, and not installing ANY of the MSI utilities. The machine performs flawlessly, runs cool, and battery lasts a decent amount of time.
2. I could not get acceptable wifi performance. After trying various versions of the Killer Networks drivers, I gave up, and replaced the card with an Intel 8260.
In summary, I should probably give less stars, as most consumers do not expect, and should not have to troubleshoot a new laptop, from a reputable company. I guess now that my machine is operating perfectly, the frustration has passed, and I’m left with only satisfaction.
Put it this way – not for novice users……and MSI, if you are reading this…..give us a clean windows image without all the junk!

|Great performer but runs extremely hot,
I’m an IT manager with 10 years of experience in the industry and exposure to many different laptop brands. I’ve been an avid gamer my entire life, having played on consoles, handhelds, and PCs (desktops and laptops). I’ve never felt comfortable buying a $1,000+ computer because of how easily they can fail and die. However, after having sold my house and ended up with some extra play money I decided to finally treat myself to a high-end computer. I’ve never bought any laptops worth more than $700, so this was quite a change for me. This is my first true gaming laptop. Was it worth the high price tag? I’m starting to think, “Yes.”
The one thing to keep in mind with this laptop is that it comes with a cutting edge and new graphics card. That’s probably why the laptop is so pricey. The card performs beautifully, though. I can play Battlefield 4 at 100+ FPS with all settings totally maxed. There is the occasional in-game jitter, but that might be from latency with the server or because I have BF4 installed on my 7200RPM driver rather than the SSD. All other games I have tested all run beautifully with maxed out settings.
I’m very happy with the performance of the card. However, it puts out a ton of heat. When idle or performing very light tasks, the CPU sits at around 50C. During gaming the CPU hits around 80C and the GPU hits around 70C. During gaming the underside of the laptop becomes extremely hot. Hot to the point that you can’t keep your fingers on the laptop. That makes me extremely worried about the longevity of this laptop. As soon as I’m done gaming, though, the temps drop back down to 50ishC very quickly, so the cooling systems seem to work well at least. To help with air flow I bought a Sofia + Sam Oversized Memory Foam Lap Desk and also a E-PRANCE® X5 15-17 inch Gaming Laptop USB Fan Cooler with 4 Fans at 1200 RPM. The cooling pad does seem to help keep the laptop around 5-10ish C cooler. There’s also a “SuperCooler” mode you can put your laptop into that runs the fans at 100%, but that generates a lot of noise and is kind of annoying. Still, a loud laptop is better than a dead one.
Heat issues aside, the laptop really is nice. Here are my random thoughts on the system, both good and bad:
– The keyboard feels very solid and is nice to type on. I like the red LEDs under the keys but I am disappointed you cannot customize their colors like you can on other gaming laptops by MSI and other brands.
– The screen is crisp, clear, and bright. It’s nice to look at.
– The hinge feels a little looser than I’d expect from a new laptop. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. I’m used to Dells starting out with stiff hinges and becoming loose messes. As long as MSI has well designed hinges, loose hinges at the start shouldn’t be an issue. Time will tell.
– The metal used throughout the chassis is nice. it looks and feels like a high quality laptop because of the metal.
– The laptop comes installed with lots of MSI bloatware. However, some of it does seem kind of useful. Still, was all of it needed? Probably not.
– The two year warranty from MSI (opposed to 1 year by Asus) was a huge selling point. They also extended the warranty by 3 months for free after I filled out a survey after registering my laptop.
– WILL YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY IF YOU UPGRADE YOUR LAPTOP??? On the underside of the laptop is a sticker saying, “warranty sticker void if tampered” and it appears to cover a screw you would absolutely need to remove if you wanted to upgrade your hard drive or RAM. UPDATE: I contacted MSI about this because I was so angry about not being able to upgrade my hard drive or ram. They replied with the following message: “As long as you don’t cause any visible, physical damage to the unit after you open it, your warranty will be ok. You can puncture the warranty sticker to get to the screw.”
I keep updating my review as I have more experience with the laptop. I’m actually very happy with the laptop now. My only concern is/was the extreme heat that you can feel on the underside of the laptop. However, the temperatures stay within what everyone on the internet says is acceptable levels.

|Really good purchase. Has some flaws, but is an amazing feat in tech, and a well worth it thin gaming laptop.,

I have been using the laptop for the past week now, and i can say without a shadow of a doubt that the purchase is incredibly worth it, and i have no regrets.
Laptop arrived within 6 days of purchase.
Let me start off with the worrisome things.
Reading a lot of the reviews here, made me concerned about the stuttering issues, and the dead on arrival units that might come. The packaging was excellent, and the laptop was in pristine condition. I immediately booted it up, and it was running A-OK, until i downloaded Spotify and noticed that the sound would get stuck for a fraction of a second, and whatever button i was pressing would also do the same.
The dreaded “Micro stutter”. I immediately checked the task manager, and noticed that upon boot, the CPU was at full load at 100%. You need to understand that the PC comes preloaded with so much unneeded software (Bloatware as they call them) that they hog up the PC and the CPU. So i decided to fresh install windows. Did it from within the PC, and it again installed all of the bloatware. Things like the dragon center, and the intel rapid storage program, and *cue horror music* Norton Anti Virus. So from within the control panel, you fiddle to find an option to install a fresh version of windows without any of the preloaded software, and i proceeded to do that. Let me tell you, it was the best decision since purchasing the laptop.

CPU levels dropped to 2-3% on idle, and the stuttering was gone and no where to be seen. I only reinstalled GeForce Experience, Steelseries Engine 3 (For the keyboard), and the audio drivers (DO NOT INSTALL NAHIMIC 2). The rest you can absolutely do without at all!
So TL;DR version: As soon as you get the laptop, do a proper fresh install, without any of the bloatware, to get rid of the CPU and stuttering issues.
And trust me when i say, the HDD speed is good enough for most games i have tried.
Now to the fun part.
The laptop is extremely well built. I was shocked by the form factor. This thing is thinner than the Macbook Pro, and packs in one of the best GPUs on this earth (Sure not a 1070 or 1080, but it will do a fantastic job). The aluminum build gives the laptop a very sturdy feel and finish, and the suede bottom underneath is a very nice touch for heat management.
The screen is breathtaking, and the port division is also pretty good, with the USB on the right being for a mouse, along with the various display outputs, and all the other USB (3.0) on the left, along with the audio jacks (Cue iPhone 7 joke here).
Contrary to some complaints, albeit being annoying to the thought, the fact that the power button is to the right, did not annoy me one bit. It is a sturdy button that needs a good push, so dont worry about accidentally turning off or on your PC.
The mouse-pad is OK, nothing to write home about, as the clicking is a bit resistant, but the texture is very smooth for multi-touch browsing and surfing. I have big hands, so my one complaint is that i sometimes tend to click on the mouse-pad while typing, or move the mouse accidentally, but other time I’ve gotten used to the need to not put my hands so close to the pad.
The keyboard is amazing. It is very impressive to see such a keyboard packed into such a thin body. The travel distance for keys is top notch, but definitely no mechanical keyboard, but good enough for gaming, and the back-lighting is excellent. Heads up, although in the images the keys look white, they are proper backlit, and the letters show the color of the light from beneath the button. The RGB option is pretty cool, and some games support showing you stats and health via the colors of the keyboard.
I played Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege. And they both ran phenomenally well. Overwatch was easily doing Epic settings (The highest), and giving me 70 FPS (Mainly cause my second screen is 60Hz), and Rainbow Six was running on Ultra at 60 FPS without breaking a sweat.
It is absurd to think of how much power is in this laptop, at such a size. Again, the 1060 is phenomenal! Really worth it for this kind of form fact and portability.
As it has been said, the laptop can get hot fairly quickly, and you can immediately tell the HDD is a bit warm if you are installing something, and hear the fans kick in. Speaking of which, yes they also tend to get slightly, and just slightly loud, but nothing that a simple headphones can’t help muffle. And who are we kidding, when you game, you will more than likely be on headsets, especially if in multiplayer. Heat management is pretty good, as the mouse pad, and keyboard rarely feel more than warm (The WASD keys stay relatively cool) but the laptop overall does not feel like it would overheat. The peak i…
