The best Mario Party game in years!, By

I usually don’t like the portable Mario Party games near as much as the system games. But they did a really good job with this one! It’s way better than Mario Party 9 and Mario Party 10! I kinda think it beats 8 too… It’s not perfect, but there’s a lot of good here.
The multiplayer is great! You get single cart multiplayer by downloading a free app from the eshop. Since you have to download the free app, this took a little setup time with my kids’ systems. But it makes the multiplayer fast without having to buy the game multiple times. I have a family with 4 kids and 5 3DS/2DS systems–I’m not going to buy them 4 copies of the game. This alone made this a day one purchase for me! There is download play without getting the app that lets you share some of the game from one cartridge, but that’s always too slow and it doesn’t support as much as the free app. The free app single cartridge play is awesome! There is no online multiplayer, but Mario Party has always been about playing with friends. The main party game is really good. In Toad Scramble you’re not in the same vehicle as other players! There also are a lot of fun design choices which make it more like taking on a dungeon with boss battles at the end. You still move with dice, but you all roll and go at the same time!. It’s definitely Mario party–there are stars, coins, duels, party games, etc. You can get help by collecting partners scattered on the board which give you movement and boss bonuses. It’s not all perfect. It’s really hard to catch up if you get behind. The fact that it’s the random dice rolls, the weaker players sometimes get the head start they need. Overall, it’s a fun game to play with a group. And a large part of the fun in Toad Scramble is the multiplayer mini-games. There are few if any duds and most are a blast!! The boss battles are also pretty cool and there are 12 boss battles so there’s a good variety. I’ve heard there are 53 mini games but I’m not sure how that divides among the game modes. It will get repetitious if you play a lot, but it’s the playing with friends that makes the game fun. There are quite a few mini-games outside of Toad Scramble too. Everything but Toad Scramble has to be unlocked, but it doesn’t take too long to open the game up. We haven’t played them a ton yet, but they seem like interesting side dishes. Balloon Bash is a twist on the Toad Scramble so it’s very similar. Rhythm Recital is a 10 song rhythm game that up to 4 players can cooperate to play. Mario shuffle is a two player vs board game–I’m not sure how to describe it in a sentence or two but it’s a lot of fun! Coinathlon is for up to 4 players to play 60 second long coin collecting minigames to see who can get the most coins. Coinatholon is very skill based and gets harder the further you get. Boo’s Block Party is a puzzle game almost like Puzzle League but a little easier. Still when Boo’s Block Party gets fast, it can be a panic! Challenge tower is a single player game where you try to get to the top of a tower that’s almost a Microsoft Minesweeper board. There’s also Amiibo support but mainly for the single player. I don’t see that Amiibos give you more content, but more that they give you advantages in the game. My guess is that they’re not in most multiplayer games because of how much it would slow the game down or make it less portable for the older systems. So far we really like it. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best Mario Party game in years! Even though Mario Party Island Tour is now a Nintendo Select as half as much, there is no competition–this is much better! It’s definitely better for kids, but it’s fun for me to play with my kids. |
