Perfect gaming & movie watching 21:9 monitor, May 27, 2016

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)

I currently have the Dell U3415W as my primary work monitor. It’s basically an LG curved panel, but runs at 3440×1440 vs the non-curved 2560×1080 of the LG 34UM68-P. So let’s see how this much cheaper gamer oriented panel fares.

PROS:
* Inexpensive 34" 1080p 21:9 Gaming Monitor
* No light bleed
* Good contrast ratio
* Vibrant colors
* Low pixel response time
* Stand has lots of height and angle adjustment
* Perfect for movies as well as gaming
* Plenty of features & menu options
* Built-in "backup" speaker

CONS:
* Not curved
* Somewhat low res for a big monitor
* Stand could be more secure

UNBOXING & DESIGN

Out of the box you’ve got a two-piece stand, the monitor, external power supply, HDMI cable, some documentation, and a CD for the optional monitor software. Assembly is fairly straight forward and only took a few minutes. While a bump of the monitor or table will result in some wobble, it’s still relatively stable. I’m not worried about it falling over.

There is a single joystick button on the bottom which controls everything. Powering on/off as well as navigating the built-in menu’s. It’s works rather well and is quite intuitive. I found it very easy to find what I was looking for. Also no worries about accidentally pressing it when moving the monitor around, which is nice. Although do note there are no lights on the display to indicate power. It’s not needed.

Otherwise the monitor has nice thin borders, looks quite nice on the desk, and seems to be well constructed.

GAMING

We’ll start with what this monitor was designed for; which is gaming. This is where having a lower resolution is technically beneficial. Less pixels means less GPU horsepower needed to run your games at high detail. Playing games such as GTA V, Battlefield 4, and RainbowSix Siege all look excellent. Running through a GTX 980 Ti I’m basically able to pretty much max out everything and have it run perfectly smooth.

Not quite something I could say on the Dell, which runs at a higher native resolution. Back-to-back, you can’t tell the difference at my usual 2-3 foot sitting distance. If you get up close, in some games, such as GTA V, you could see a bit of pixels or graininess on the LG 34UM68-P. That’s not how I game, so not a big deal.

In game mode, even at default latency settings, there was no perceivable input lag or delay while gaming. Everything was super fast and responsive. Excellent.

The only negative I have with 21:9 is nothing against this monitor in particular. But that some few games, such as Starcraft 2, only run at 16:9. Meaning, you’ll have black bars on the left/right. Unless you want to stretch your image. You don’t. Just have to live with it.

MOVIES

Given it’s 21:9 aspect ratio, movies are a natural thing for this type of display. Since this is the aspect ratio of most movies, you’ll have zero borders on the top of bottom. Do keep in mind not all movies are at this aspect ratio. Some could be wider or even taller. So it’s not perfect. Even lots of YouTube videos won’t scale correctly due to being uploaded incorrectly. Hopefully as these monitors become more popular, they’ll start to fix that.

Back to the movie and video watching experience. It’s great. I played several 1080p and even 4k 21:9 content side-by-side with this and the Dell monitor. You really can’t even tell the difference unless you get super close. Out of the box the LG is a bit more vibrant, with more punchy red colors. It’s less natural, but easy to adjust. Either way, looks fantastic.

As an added bonus, there is no light bleed. The curved display of the Dell has very noticeable light bleed in all 4 corners, which is fairly common with curved IPS panels. While I did miss the natural immersion of the curved display, I absolutely did not miss light bleed.

DESKTOP

The first thing I noticed on the desktop was a stuck pixel. A light tap of my finger fixed that up right away. However, I also noticed less crisp text. I played with ClearText a bit on Windows 10, and it helps a lot. But even after typing this entire review on the LG and using it for a few days, I’m still noticing this text "issue."

You can only do so much to help this. 34" is a big monitor to only run at 2560x1080p display. Sitting further away does help, of course. And it’s just as easy to do split screen multi-tasking, which is where 21:9 also excels at in the work place. More than just a great canvas for excel sheets and audio/video editing. Windows 10 pretty much negates the need for 3rd party software to take advance of the large screen real-estate.

Simply drag your windows to the far left/right or in each corner, to easily segment your windows. It works just as well here, as it does on the Dell…

Super clear picture. You can adjust stand height, tilt, and angle (left/right if your desk is lop sided). I use it for work and games. Fast response rate and very good monitor menu options. It defaults at 60hz but had no problems setting it to 75hz in the nvidia control panel. No issues so far. You probably won’t have to do this if you don’t need the refresh rate or are using Radeon cards. Just enable free sync. This is a no brainer replacement for a dual monitor set up.

Hopefully your looking at this review thinking about taking the plunge into "ultra wide" displays. I was in a similar boat and figured I would take the cheaper option over the 1440p version of this monitor (Just a heads up THIS monitor’s resolution is 2560×1080). I dont need the extra high definition and dont wanna spend 0 on one that I dont like. Simple and to the point, I LOVE THIS MONITOR. Everyone that has seen my computer has said "that monitor looks so cool or things similar. I love the extra room while i have two windows split and can see both with ease. the lower resolution doesn’t bother me at all and can barely notice it. Playing games…. all I can say is WOW!!!! I make music and love love love the extra room.

The only lame things about the monitor are…
-The Price… A new format always cost an absurd amount of money. And this is no exception. If I didn’t game and just wanted the extra room for multi tasking, I would buy two monitors and have the price be cheaper and save a couple bucks.
-The Room… This monitor takes up A TON of space on my desk…. Its almost 3 feet long!
-The black bars… are probably the most frustrating thing. Remember when we switched from tube tvs to widescreen tvs? Everything was a box…. Well welcome back bars on the side… Total mood killer while watching youtube. but watching movies is amazing due to most being shot in the ultra wide format.

This monitor is def not for everyone! but I don’t thing ill ever go back to a 16:9 monitor for my computer! If you have any questions let me know in the comments!
