M-Audio AV42 Professional Studio Monitor Speakers (Pair)
I purchased these as a replacement for my old AV40s because the left speaker had stopped working. I was very happy with the sound quality of the AV40s for the audio production work I do as a Voiceover Artist. I thought the AV42s would be similar, but was disappointed. The high end is much too bright and the low end is not pronounced enough. I ended up purchasing another pair AV40s while they were still available. I’ll keep the AV42s as an upgrade for another computer I own. The AV42s are a pretty good (not great) pair of computer speakers but they are not monitors.

objectively, a low end mid-tier speaker.
compared to the av40s, a significant downgrade. speakers are ~6lbs lighter, but it comes at a cost. sound quality: echos?! and weak bass, hollow highs.

[UPDATED]For gaming? Yes! Audio production? Not so much.,

6/22/2016 UPDATE: One of the speaker wire clips has fallen out of the right monitor, and it’s very difficult to put it back on, rendering my right speaker totally useless until I can get it fixed. Dropped my review from a 3 to a 2.
I’m going to split this into two parts, because they’re both ones that are very important; using these for gaming, and using them for actual audio production. AUDIO PRODUCTION They’re alright. Not bad, not great. Just alright. They sell themselves as reference monitors, but I feel as if the bass is a little under-exaggerated, and a little too much of a sparkle in the highs to properly mix a song solely on them. They’d make great speakers for testing your mix though, just don’t expect any miracles, and if you want to take yourself more seriously, pick up something a little more expensive. These are not what you’re looking for for testing a mix. GAMING I do a lot of gaming on the side as well, primarily GTAV, CSGO, Skyrim, L4D2 and Half Life 2. So mainly shooters. These are GREAT for this kind of experience. The underwhelming bass actually helps with the gunshots and lower pitched voices most of the characters will have, and the sparkle in the highs really help with approaching footsteps. You probably can’t get much better for gaming at this price. The only reason these get a 3 is because they can’t serve their main purpose, delivering a flat response for creating proper mixes. If it wasn’t for the fact that I also play games, they’d probably get a 2, and would be a nice new paperweight. |

sound quality: echos?! and weak bass, hollow highs.
running headphones through the headphone output, there’s a significant quality drop (as if you took 44k and resampled down to ~21k)
speakers no longer have their magnetic shielding.
loss of trs input
cabinet brittle, light, thin.
wires are cheap, plastic and insulation brittle
