Some changes, and some of those are good and some bad., August 27, 2014
This review is from: Madden NFL 15 – PlayStation 3 (Video Game)
I like this year’s game better than last year’s, at least. Way too many issues with 25 to even list here. It looks a fair amount better, but not half as good as all the evidently PS4 pics they were claiming to be PS3 (kind of expected that, though). I like the new training method since I hated the practices, but it has its faults as well. Right now at least in my offline connected franchise, I’m only able to get points to improve about 4-5 players each week, and those points are rarely enough to raise a stat even a point. So while the players that play in the game may get some stats for their performance like last year’s, you have to carefully pick and choose who you want to help. That’s not all bad; you could choose to let a veteran qb start and let him get the stat raises and use the prep points on a rookie, for example, like in real football. But that kind of throws those veteran points down the toilet if you’re going to start the rookie soon anyway. And I hate how they stuck with the “throw for 300 yards and 3 tds and get a nice bundle of points” and “throw for 299 yards and 2 tds and get nothing”. Kind of stupid, not to mention unrealistic; there should be a fantasy football type scoring system with maybe a cap instead.

The supposedly new defensive system is nothing to me but a step sideways. I play coach mode on all-pro so I can’t vouch for other types, but in mine I’ve played 8 games now and have only seen 8 interceptions and five fumbles, and I keep turning the sliders up on them. My sacks were totally out of control, at first’ with the Vikings, I had 19 in my first three games. Changed the sliders again, and it’s gotten better, but now the opposing qb often has all day. Again, there should be a programmed cutoff where the longer the player is blocked the more likely they are to get free. The qbs are WAY too accurate out of the box, as well. Sam Bradford of the Rams completed his first 18 passes before I bounced out of the game and changed the sliders again. Managed to get it to where most qbs are about 60-65 percent completion now, which is pretty good. But where is all this tough D they are talking about?
Near as I can tell, it’s against the run…to the level of pure annoyance. Of the 8 games I’ve played with Adrian Peterson, 3 of those he’s only averaged about 3 yards, and 3 of those about 2.5. He had 2 pretty good games, but mostly from breakaway runs. The runners tend to bounce to the outside again and again, where they are almost always met by a defender or three. Still playing with the sliders, but no real luck on anything accurate yet.

The commentary is still absolutely pathetic. Yes, there is more of it, and that part is nice; they’ll say what your team did last week as far as yards passing or something like that. But they left in the “Comes to the line looking to avoid being sacked for a third time”, which you hear about every 4th play until he’s finally sacked again. And so many totally wrong comments. I kicked a field goal at the end of the 1st quarter to go up 10-0, and they announced that that pretty much wrapped up the game. News to me. And they are constantly saying that my punt returner muffed the kick when he didn’t. And the lag; it’s not bad most of the time, but there’s a biggie when it tries to cut to a sideline shot or a view of the stadium. Your play calling box pops up, and then you have to just sit and wait for a couple of seconds.

Speaking of which, kick returning seems to be wrecked. I haven’t had one for more than 15 yards, and that’s after taking control. And while the new kicking arc system works nice if you’re the kicker, it seems to have changed how the wind effects the ball which is now much more greatly. A ten mile an hour wind, even from side to side, seems to cut the kick distance by 15-20 yards. Which wouldn’t be that big a deal, except your blockers don’t move up until after you’ve caught the ball. So you have to wait for them to move in front of you, and hope the defenders (especially on a punt) don’t nail you first.

There’s probably more to say, but I’m getting tired of typing. It’s playable and I enjoy it, but it ticks me off at the same time that they can’t seem to get things tweaked right after all these years. It should be the easiest thing in the world; they’re not making a new game ever year, and should just be able to wisely choose the best parts and improve the others. But they can never get it all right.

Like my in game Vikings; kudos on the darker non-pastel purple color, and the helmets looks great. But would it have killed you to do the correct pointy font on the numbers instead of a generic one? Just pure laziness.

freezes completely during game play, full system boot., August 30, 2014
This review is from: Madden NFL 15 – PlayStation 3 (Video Game)
I’d you google around the internet for “madden 15 freezing” – you’ll see a few forums at EA.com increasing slowly about the game freezing during game play. As it turns out, the game freezes during gameplay whether its the digital download or the disc. Poor job of EA releasing such a buggy game to patch later. I have yet to complete one game due to the game play freezing. Avoid this until freezing is solved.

A Worthy Update for the Casual Madden Gamer, August 27, 2014
By

This review is from: Madden NFL 15 – PlayStation 3 (Video Game)

I know there are tons of hardcore Madden gamers that are way better than I’ll ever be — this review is more for the casual fan who loves football and mostly plays the computer and likes to play against his friends every now and then.

**UPDATE AUGUST 29, 2014**

Okay, I’ve had a little more time to play around with this and feel confident in saying that the basic gameplay is very similar to Madden 25. I don’t really get into career modes or MUT, so I have no info based on that. That said, if you have Madden 25, I don’t know that this will be worth the money to upgrade to unless —

a) You want the new and much improved Skills Trainer modes (see below for more info)
b) You want updated rosters for this season
c) You want new playbooks for your team (example — last season, Peyton Manning and the Broncos used the Pistol a lot but the Broncos playbook didn’t have a Pistol formation you could use. In the new version, they added the Pistol and got rid of formations the Broncos didn’t really use in real life. Additionally, the Broncos defensive playbook has new plays and formations as well. I’m going to guess all the Playbooks have been updated.)

I think there is a slight improvement on defensive AI, but not enough of one to justify a pricetag. I personally am glad I got the new version, but people a little more frugal or who expect more for their money are probably better off waiting until they get a Next Gen system and getting latest version of Madden for that.

**END UPDATE**

To start off with, what features are on the Next Gen systems that’s missing from the PS3 version? Unfortunately, some of the cooler sounding upgrades. The most advertised updates — the new playcall system with probability analytics, the “jump the snap” functionality of defense, the defensive camera angle view, the Coach Glass second screen feature, and the presentation aren’t on the older systems. And from what I’ve read, the improved AI on defense isn’t as deep as the PS4/Xbox One versions.

So why four stars? Based on the very little I’ve played, this is a solid upgrade to Madden 25, in my opinion.

I’ll be upfront about this — I haven’t had time to take a deep dive into this game. My reactions are based on the skills trainer mode that starts up when you begin playing the game, but that alone is a substantial upgrade. Almost all of my friends are casual gamers on older systems who have played Madden a lot in the past. Several of them had a tough time getting used to the passing system used in the last couple versions of Madden — they’d continuously back up and search for an open receiver in what amounted to a 30 step drop at times, LOL. Obviously, they’d get sacked and be frustrated with the game.

This new version of Madden is great for that kind of player — the tutorials are absolutely amazing and what I wished I had when I first started playing Madden. They have the same basic ones from last year with running the football and such, but now they have more in-depth defensive and offensive tutorials that go beyond stick skills and teach you football concepts based on real football strategy. You learn how to read and beat Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover 3, etc. defenses and then they go into passing concepts like digs, Texas, floods, etc.

This was all old hat to me, but I actually had to go digging around on YouTube and read several books detailing football passing concepts and strategy (personally, I loved it because I got to learn more about real football, but not everyone is into all that — some people just want to plat the game). Now the game has dozens of tutorials to help new players get up to speed and old players to shed their bad habits. The best part is, it’s all based on real football strategy and concepts. Even though I know all this stuff, it’s actually been fun to go through the tutorials, as they’ve become a little mini-game you can use to sharpen up.

And while I don’t have a PS4 to compare it to, I can tell the physics and defensive AI in this game have been upgraded. A lot of the easy passes I used to make on Madden 25 are harder to make now and require more timing — the defensive players play their zones better and man coverage is a little bit sharper than before. The passes “feel” different and it looks like putting touch on the ball will be more important than before (I used to just bullet pass all the time, but now the defenders are better about reacts to the passes).

I still have a ways to go, but I feel this game is a satisfying upgrade to Madden 25, which I was getting really, really bored with. Unfortunately, the missing Next Gen features mean I can’t really give this a perfect score and even with the updates, this still might not be different enough for the many hardcore gamers who adapt more quickly than I do to new gameplay. However, if you’re a casual gamer who just wants…
