Not what I was expecting from Call of Duty., December 16, 2013
This review is from: Call of Duty: Ghosts – PlayStation 4 (Video Game)
I have been a purchaser of the yearly installments of Call of Duty since Modern Warfare 2. I bought Battlefield 4 and Ghosts for my PS4 at launch. I only bought Battlefield 4 because the guy at Gamestop urged me to with my left over trade credits. I was sadly disappointed with Ghosts after playing it for the last month. I have no enjoyment when I play it anymore and am going to be getting rid of it soon. It is very rare that I have been able to get into a room where someone hasn’t hacked the game and goes 35-1. Here are the main pros and cons of Ghosts.

Pros:
1.) No target finder from Call of Duty Black Ops II
2.) 1080p graphics
3.) The ability to open and close doors on buildings allows for setting up traps.
4.) Rather than prestiging a single character over and over, you just max out one of 10 squad members and then move on.

Cons:
1.) The new perk system is beyond confusing.
2.) The weapons are not balanced.
3.) The dynamic events on each map don’t really do anything.
4.) Rooms are hacked and the game has only been out a little more than a month.
5.) Maps are ridiculously huge and typically games can’t exceed 9v9.
6.) The guard dog can be killed with a throwing knife, but can’t be stabbed and takes a full clip to kill.

Overall, I wouldn’t say I never had fun playing the game but after a week of playing it, I kept coming across hackers. It’s no fun playing against people that can’t be killed. Before this game launched, the developers promised several things that have not been delivered upon. They promised dedicated servers, a punkbuster that would stop all the hacking and glitching, and dynamic events that would change the maps. We have none of these. What they have given us in several updates is a wolf skin for that guard dog that you can buy for .99 and an ugly Christmas sweater camo for your guns.

In conclusion, this game is not fun if you are a long time fan of the series. It pretty much rewards all of the worst playing habits: quick scoping and camping. The controls feel stiff and sluggish. It’s almost like playing a generic version of Call of Duty. Someday, the developers might realize that all people are really looking for is an updated version of Modern Warfare 2. As I said before, I will be getting rid of this game. I can’t see putting any more money into this game when it is clear that the developer would rather release add-ons that they can charge another + for than fix the original product.

RENT this before you buy it… even at price point I recommend RENTING first, December 22, 2013
This review is from: Call of Duty: Ghosts – PlayStation 4 (Video Game)
I’ve been playing Call of Duty for years, and loved it. The campaign on this version is good, graphics are really good, but that’s where the fun ends.

As for on-line gaming:
1) Sony has yet to run the game on dedicated servers (why PS+ requirement then?)
2) Ghosts was hacked in first week it was out – you’ll come up against people who are impossible to kill, have endless ammo.
3) Re-used code
4) Maps so large it does nothing but promote camping and sniping.
5) Spawning is laughable, you’ll respawn right in front of your enemy and get immediately shot in the back.
6) Dogs are very difficult to kill
7) Leveling up is very time consuming

Bottom line, if you’re just going to play the campaign then buy the game. But it you are going to play on-line, I’d pass on this one.

The on-line gaming for Ghosts IS NOT FUN, it is aggravating and infuriating. Defeats the purpose of "gaming" – for me anyhow. There’s no ‘game’ here, except for the hackers and campers. That said, I’ve spent a fair amount of time in Squad mode – where you fight ‘bots’ vs humans, but this mode can get boring. So it’s either boring or infuriating. Wish I could say its good, but I can’t.

Yes, its bad enough that I would sell my copy of the game, but I purchased the digital download version from PlayStation. This will be the last CoD game I buy blindly.

Ghosts of Former Days – An in-depth look at the multiplayer., April 22, 2014

I won’t even bother covering the single-player campaign. Why would I? You’re a masochist if you’d even consider paying sixty bucks for this game’s campaign. A friend and I played through it and almost had no words for it — that’s how bad it is.

On to the multiplayer… Well, it’s no secret that the vast majority of people hop on Call of Duty for the online multiplayer component. It’s too bad then, that this game has some of the absolute worst multiplayer I’ve ever seen in my ~15 or so years of FPS gaming. Please note that even if you enjoyed the offline split-screen, this game only has support for two players max, which boggles the mind, but it’s only one of the many blunders this game has wrought forth.

First off, let’s talk about the maps. Oh. My. Frickin’. Gawd. These maps were designed by people who harbor an immense hatred of the human race, and as such clearly sought out to design the *worst* maps they could’ve possibly come up with. This is Call of Duty, not Battlefield, not Tribes, not Planetside. Why then, are the maps the size of friggin’ small countries? You’ll be running around for minutes (this is no exaggeration) without finding a single person to kill or get killed by sometimes. Not to mention thanks to the amazing art direction, all of the colors are horribly washed out and the textures blurry undefined globs of nothingness, so the characters all blend in, making it very easy to miss enemy players, thus winding up getting your brains plastered all over the walls very often.

I mean, the game is a 6v6 game for the most part, but the size of the maps completely ruins the flow of the game. People complained that Black Ops 2’s maps were “too small”, when in reality they were just right for that game, if not a little enclosed and claustrophobic. Moving on from the *size* of the maps, the actual *layouts* are JUST AS BAD as the ridiculous size. These maps were clearly designed for campers, and oh boy — will you experience a lot of camping. It’s incredibly frustrating, because I can’t fathom why people would pay just to sit in a dark corner for 10 minutes at a time, hoping to get two kills at least. It contributes to the game’s incredibly boring slow pace, bringing the “action” to a crawl on all but the smallest maps in the game (these few small maps are terrible as well due to the aforementioned abysmal layouts.)

The gun balance is almost non-existent. I’ve been out-sniped by guys using SMG’s with no optical sights or foregrips even. This type of crap doesn’t even happen in games that take skill, like Quake or Counter-Strike. There are so many guns (which all have some of the dumbest made-up names I’ve ever witnessed, by the way, making it easy to never know what the hell you’re even carrying or getting killed by) that many of them end up being irrelevant and thus never used. This is a far cry from something like Call of Duty 4, where tons of different players used almost every gun in that game. This creates an atmosphere of overwhelming “sameness” that squashes any need for creativity and variety.

Speaking of which, remember that “rank up system” that CoD is known for popularizing? Ha yeah well, in this game, it’s completely pointless. In this game, yes, there are ranks, but there are also “Squad Points”, which you get for doing things such as ranking up, killing people, completing challenges, falling off a two-foot ledge, reloading your gun, or simply existing. You will end up with so many of these damn coins that you won’t even use them all. You can buy literally any weapon, any piece of equipment, any PERK you so desire, as long as you have enough coins to do so. This fact, combined with the fact that it’s oh so easy to get the coins, completely undermines the ranking system’s very existence to the point of redundancy. It becomes clear that the rank system is only there to give people something to “work towards”, if you somehow feel your life is already too empty or something.

There is a character customization feature, which is cool because you can create and play as female soldiers as well now. But why did they heavily advertise this feature so much, when 99.999% of the customization items are LOCKED, and 99.999% of said items have absolutely bats*** insane requirements to unlock? Most people will never unlock these items, let alone use them, rendering them pointless.

Pointlessness. That’s a recurring theme of this game. Most of the weapons? Pointless. The perks? There’s a gazillion of them, and most of them are pointless. The rank system? Pointless. Killstreaks? 99% of them — pointless. WHY DOES THIS GAME EVEN EXIST, you may wonder to yourself. I myself have no idea, besides the obvious — easy money for Activision.

The killstreaks play a greatly reduced role in this game. Remember in previous games how easy it was to shoot down enemy aircraft? No longer in this game, since the only launcher that…
