Another solid entry into the Just Dance franchise, although not much new in this version other than the new playlist, October 23, 2015

This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii (Video Game)

Just Dance 2016 is essentially "Just Dance 7". Times have changed, of course, since the first Just Dance was released in 2010. You hardly see motion control games anymore, much less exergames. And yet Ubisoft continues to churn out new versions of Just Dance every year.

Even though they release versions for every platform now, it’s the version for the good ol’ Wii that continues to outsell the next most popular version (the Wii U) by more than a 3:1 margin. Seems that a lot of us are keeping our old Wiis around, if only for the occasional exercise session or party.

Just Dance 2016 continues to have the same simple interface as all of its predecessors. Once you set up your profile ("dancer card") you can just jump into dancing by selecting a song. Unlike past versions of Just Dance, they did away with the "difficulty" and "intensity" ratings for each song.

As with past versions, the game supports up to four people with four Wii remotes. Most of the songs are choreographed for a single person (i.e., all dance to the same moves), but in some cases they came up with an intricate dance routine for a duo, trio, or quartet of dancers where each dancer has his or her own independent moves that work together with the others. Those are the dances that not only tend to be the most fun ones to play, they’re also the most fun to watch.

Here’s a list of the songs, the artists, and the number of dancers the default routine is choreographed for. Certain songs also have alternate choreography that you can unlock.

All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor (1)
No Control – One Direction (4)
I Gotta Feeling – The Black Eyed Peas (1)
Fancy – Iggy Azalea Ft. Charli XCX (3)
These Boots Are Made for Walking – The Girly Team (1)
Animals – Martin Garrix (2)
Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson Ft. Bruno Mars (1)
Balkan Blast Remix – Angry Birds (4)
Heartbeat Song – Kelly Clarkson (1)
Hey Mama – Daid Guetta Ft. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha & Afrojack (3)
Ievan Polkka – Hatsune Miku (1)
The Choice is Yours – Darius Dante Van Dijk (1)
Fun – Pitbull Ft. Chris Brown (1)
William Tell Overture – Rossini (2)
Lights – Ellie Goulding (1)
Chiwawa – Wanko Ni Mero Mero (1)
You Never Can Tell – A. Caveman & The Backseats (2)
Born This Way – Lady Gaga (3)
Kaboom Pow – Nikki Yanofsky (1)
When The Rain Begins To Fall – Sky Trucking (2)
Same Old Love – Selena Gomez (3)
Cool For The Summer – Demi Lovato (1)
Want To Want Me – Jason Derulo (1)
Under The Sea – Disney’s "The Little Mermaid" (1)
This is How We Do – Katy Perry (4)
Hit The Road Jack – Charles Percy (2)
Junto a Ti – Disney’s "Violetta" (3)
Blame – Calvin Harris Ft. John Newman (1)
Irish Meadow Dance – O’Callaghan’s Orchestra (4)
Rabiosa – Shakira Fr. El Cata (1)
Circus – Britney Spears (4)
You’re the One That I Want – From The Movie Grease (2)
Hangover (BaBaBa) – Buraka Som Sistema (2)
I’m An Albatroz – AronChupa (1)
Kool Kontact – Glorious Black Belts (2)
Teacher – Nick Jonas (1)
Stuck on a Feeling – Prince Royce (1)
Boys (Summertime Love) – The Lemon Cubes (3)
Drop the Mambo – Diva Carmina (1)
Gibberish – MAX (2)
Copacabana – Frankie Bostello (4)
Let’s Groove – Equinox Stars (3)
Stadium Flow – Imposs (1)

As you can see, the playlist primarily consists of several songs from pop stars like Meghan Traynor, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, One Direction, Nick Jonas. They threw in a smattering of oldies and a kid’s song or two, mostly performed by a cover artist or band. There are also a few quirky songs, including one based on the Angry Birds theme song (complete with four birds from the game with freakish human legs and arms). Despite the occasional unique song, the playlist did overall seem less diverse and eclectic than in previous years.

Gameplay is the same as every other version of Just Dance from the beginning. You hold the Wii remote in your right hand and follow the on-screen dancer’s moves as if you’re looking in a mirror. Visual cues in the form of stick figure icons will scroll across the bottom to let you know what move is coming up.

One question that invariably arises is—how accurate are the motion controls? The quick answer to that is, they’re as accurate as they’re going to be. I think it was in Just Dance 3 that Ubisoft "figured it out" and since then the controls have always been "good enough". Which means that you’re not going to get the precision of, say, an Xbox Kinect but…

Best Just Dance game since Just Dance 4, October 27, 2015
This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii (Video Game)
If your favorite Just Dance game is Just Dance 4, then you will not be disappointed with Just Dance 2016. It’s basically Just Dance 4 with the clunky interface of Just Dance 2014-2015.

For me, Just Dance 4 was perfection. The song selection, the dance synchronization, the interface, everything was perfect. Most importantly, it was fun. It had the "Just Dance magic" which was for some reasons lacking in Just Dance 2014-2015.

I loaded up Just Dance 2016 in my almost 10 years old Wii expecting to be disappointed again. However, I was blown away. The "Just Dance magic" is back. I had so much fun playing. The songs are fun, the dances are fun.

I didn’t get a chance to play all the songs, but it seems most of them are kid friendly (unlike Just Dance 2014-2015), so no need to hesitate if you plan to play with the little ones.

If you are a long time Just Dance player, then this is a must buy. If you are new to Just Dance, then I recommend purchasing Just Dance 3-4 and Just Dance 2016, they are the best in the series.

An “OK” entry in the Just Dance series; better than the last couple, at any rate, October 21, 2015
By

This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii (Video Game)
I have kept up with the Just Dance series from the beginning and own almost all of them to date – Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, Summer Party, Greatest Hits, ABBA, Michael Jackson, JD2014, JD2015 – and now JD2016. Not only are they incredibly fun, but they also serve as my primary workout regime. In 2012 I had cancer surgery which kept me off my feet for some time, and Just Dance really helped me bounce back and lose upwards of 60 pounds that first year with very little modification to my diet. Not only did I slim down, but I also FEEL better than ever and I’m not exaggerating when I say I have continued to play these games literally every day since. I only mention these things now so any criticisms I might make come off as more credible and not just the rantings of a casual player who simply can’t keep up with the steps or hold the controller properly. Trust me, I know these games inside out by now, lol.

But luckily, there’s actually very little here to complain about. The first thing you’ll notice is that the interface is exactly the same as JD 2015. From the game menu to the “wall” which notifies you about new unlockables, anyone who played the last game will have no problem jumping in and navigating this one. There’s no official Sweat Mode, but you can opt to have the game keep track of your calories just through normal gameplay which is basically the same thing so it’s no big deal. Online play has also returned and offers replay value for those looking to collect all the player card icons.

I gave the last couple installments a hard time because the motion detection was pretty terrible, but for JD2016 it seems to have been tweaked and I can confidently say it is “OK.” Parts 3 and 4 are still the best in terms of motion accuracy so it’s kind of a mystery why it’s only gone downhill since then, but this game has yet to make me want to pull my hair out, unlike the last one where you seemed to earn more points from standing completely still than anything else. (I’m not even exaggerating.) That’s not to say some of the choreography isn’t still hit or miss; I get that it should be challenging but I also think a good chunk of it borders too much on bizarre hand posing and random flailing about with no connection to the music whatsoever. I’m also not a fan of the group dances, which comprise about HALF the tracks, because they tend to play out more like little scenes or skits rather than actual dances. I imagine they might be more fun in the context of a party or group setting, but as a solo player just looking to stay fit, they don’t do much for me in terms of exercise. The instructional pictograms are useless as ever – ignore them.

As far as the song selection itself, I foresee fans being divided. The vast majority of tracks are techno/EDM in nature and by little known artists, some made exclusively for this game I would guess, and while I personally don’t mind, it definitely makes this the least mainstream entry in the Just Dance series to date. Of course you still have a handful of recent radio hits from the likes of Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Nick Jonas, etc, but overall the variety isn’t quite as inclusive as it could have been. Again, not necessarily a complaint for me, but it may be for someone else. The graphics are about on par with the last couple games; they are whimsical and colorful and often border on photorealism which is cool, but there’s also a lot of dizzying visual effects and other “stuff” going on which sometimes makes it difficult to see exactly what your dancer is supposed to be doing.

So, while perhaps not a 5-star title unto itself – but then every dance game has had its own set of quirks to work around – my early impression is that JD2016 is a welcome step up from the last couple games which brought more frustration than fun. No matter what your goal is, whether it just be goofing around for a few minutes at a time or making a rigorous workout routine out if it, everyone should be able to find at least one thing to love about it. Boogie on!

*Update 10/27: After a week of daily playing I should report that this game has frozen and/or stuttered at least once per session. It has not required a full hard shut-down of the Wii system as of yet, but it seems to "think" a lot and it’s kind of obnoxious. Also, the load times are noticeably longer than any other Just Dance game.
