I’ve had the physical version for a week, but I’ve had the digital version since it got released. They released this digitally December 17th. And it’s exactly the same game either way. The only difference is that you can sell or the kids can take the disk version to a friends, but my kids can play the download version without me switching disks. The short review: The long review: CONS: World size: Doesn’t use gamepad well: Cost: PROS: -The Mario theme world is a lot of fun. For a family that likes Mario and Minecraft, there’s a lot of fun stuff there. My kids have really enjoyed exploring it and it’s made them want to build more Mario theme stuff. -Off-TV play in single player works great. In single player mode you can play on the gamepad only. That’s really nice. The girls can watch something on Netflix using the Roku while my son plays Minecraft Wii U on the gamepad. It’s a nice feature. -It’s being continually updated. Yes, this is true with all Minecraft versions, but they’ve not just added stuff but slowly improved like adding classic controller support. So there’s still hope that someday we’ll get inventory controls with touchscreen or two player gamepad/TV play. CONCLUSION:

Okay there seems to be a lot of confusion on this game. If you want to play with just 1 player, then all you need is the game pad. If you want to do multi-player, you’ll have to get either the Nintendo Pro Controller or the classic controller that plugs into the wii remote. You can still use the game pad during multi player but make sure that the game pad does not display the game on it. This will not allow you to play multi player otherwise. Everyone is rating this poorly because they have to buy another controller but the reality is that Nintendo has been shifting away from the wii remote for awhile. The pro controllers are great. As for the game itself it is everything you’d expect in a minecraft game with tons of extras that make it well worth the . The kids I watch have played minecraft on other systems and they love this!

I have enjoyed the Wii U port of Minecraft more than I thought I would. It’s a fun way to play Minecraft either by yourself or with friends and I think 4J Studios has done a decent job of giving us Wii U users a version of the game. I am disappointed that there is no GamePad integration beyond Off-TV Play(inventory management on the GamePad would be fun) and that the world size is somewhat small, but this is to be expected.
If you’re just looking to play a version of Minecraft on your Wii U that is identical to the one found on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, with some exclusive Super Mario DLC thrown in for free, then don’t hesitate to buy it. Also, please know: you CAN use the Classic Controller Pro with this game. It is required for local multiplayer, but third-party Classic Controller Pros are so cheap that it really shouldn’t matter. |

The short review:
My kids have a Wii U as their console. They love Minecraft. I bought the Wii U version. They’re very happy! It runs great. They play together and have a lot of fun. They love the Mario theme world. They love everything Minecraft. It’s not perfect, but the Wii U version is very good. The PS4/XBOX1 version is better. But if you don’t have a PS4/XBOX1, this is a good version of the greatest game of their generation!
The long review:
I’m not going to explain Minecraft. Your kids already know how to play Minecraft. But I will explain the pros and cons of the Wii U version.
CONS:
The wii U version gets a lot of flack. There are three problems that most people talk about: world size, doesn’t use gamepad well, and cost.
World size:
Basically people think the Wii U should be able to be better than the XBOX 360/PS3 version but the game is an offshoot of those versions. So the world is the same size as the XBOX360/PS3 and not the larger size of the PS4/XBOX1. I think the Wii U probably could handle a little more, but then Majong would have a different version to maintain. I don’t think the WiiU has the same power as the PS4/XBOX1 and it’s easier to keep it in line with the XBOX360/PS3 than to really have the WiiU on it’s own line. Updates were slower to the WiiU at first, but now we’re expecting the Battle Mini game at the same time as every one else–I’m sure it would be slower if the WiiU version was really different. It would be awesome to have a bigger world, but my kids are happy.
Doesn’t use gamepad well:
The Wii U version should be awesome because the crafting and inventory should use the gamepad and it doesn’t. In multiplayer it should show the map and it doesn’t. If you have the screen duplicated, you can do a few things on the touchscreen. You can use all the menus before you get into a world with the touchscreen. Once you get in a Minecraft world you can switch between items on your hot box. You can enter Crafting and Inventory with the touchscreen. You can Craft with the touchscreen, but you can’t mess with inventory. When you open a chest you can’t mess with inventory. This to me is the most frustrating limitation and I’m hoping they improve it more! At the same time some say you can’t do anything with the touchscreen, but you can do quite a few things.
Cost:
The other problem with the Wii U version is that it costs $10 more at $30. But, it comes with DLC: Skin packs: Battle & Beasts skin pack and Battle & Beasts 2 skin pack; Texture packs: Natural texture pack, City texture pack, and Fantasy texture pack; Mash-up packs: Festive mash-up and the exclusive Super Mario mash-up pack. If you bought all this on the PC version it would cost $33. I’m sure the Wii U version will be the lowest selling version of Minecraft, and it costs money to develop the game. I’m sure the higher price is to try and recover that development cost. And they could have just made it cost more without giving us DLC. I’m willing to accept the cost and my family has gotten more out of this Wii U game than many $60 Wii U games we’ve bought.
PROS:
-Multiplayer works really well on the Wii U. It’s TV only. You can’t have one player on the gamepad and one on the TV. It’s up to four players. You can use the Wii U pro controllers and Classic controllers. It didn’t originally support Classic controllers so you will find conflicting info on the internet but it does now. You can’t use Wiimote and Nunchuck or Gamecube controllers. One player has to use the gamepad. But all three of my kids play Minecraft together great! The two versions we have are the tablet version and the Wii U. They play alone on the tablets but they play together on the Wii U and it works great.
-The Mario theme world is a lot of fun. For a family that likes Mario and Minecraft, there’s a lot of fun stuff there. My kids have really enjoyed exploring it and it’s made them want to build more Mario theme stuff.
-Off-TV play in single player works great. In single player mode you can play on the gamepad only. That’s really nice. The girls can watch something on Netflix using the Roku while my son plays Minecraft Wii U on the gamepad. It’s a nice feature.
