Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)

I usually build my own desktop PCs, so I can configure them with exactly the parts and specs I need for what I want to use it for. Acer has done this groundwork for you with their Predator G6 line, which is one of their top-end machines built for gaming or heavy workstation use. The Predator (on Amazon) comes in 4 configurations:
1) The budget G3 with Intel i5-6400 processor (2.7GHz) and NVidia GTX950 and 8GB RAM,
2) the G3 with Intel i7-6700 (3.4GHz) and GTX950 and 16GB RAM,
3) the Intel i7-6700K (4.0GHz) with GTX970 and 16GB RAM and adds 128GB SSD, and
4) the i7-6700K (4.0GHz) with GTX980 and 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

Which model do I need?: If budget is an issue, and you are content with mostly "medium" to "high" graphics settings on existing games (e.g. Skyrim, Tomb Raider, GTA V, Assasin’s Creed 3), then #1 or #2 should suffice. For newer games like Doom, The Division, and especially VR games like EVE: Valkrie with Oculus Rift, then you will want #3 or 4. Also, if you are planning on 4K video, then 3 or 4 are really your only options, and that’s still pushing it with a low framerate. This PC cannot do SLI, so if 4K gaming is definitely in your future, I would look at larger systems that can fit more than one video card. I have attached a picture of the inside of this rig, which shows that it comes with a mini-ATX board that is low on expansion slots. In my version (#3), the PNY GTX970 video card is blocking any other PCI slots that are available. To remove the panel like I have, you have to press on two plastic tabs on the back panel to remove it, then there are two Phillips screws holding each side panel on. Remove those and the panel will slide back and up to remove.

Expandability: There is space for another internal hard drive with available SATA and power cables. You can of course also swap out the included 1 or 2TB drive for a larger one, or get an external drive. You can expand the memory (16GB (2x8GB) included) up to 64GB in the 4 slots provided. Remember that this new Intel Skylake CPU requires DDR4 SD memory — you cannot swap in your older DDR3 memory. Also, I would switch the optical drive to a Blu-Ray writer drive, which are coming down in price and will be handy to store much more data or movies on one disc.

Case and peripherals: The custom-designed case is rugged and looks aggressive with its ‘tire-track’ design and red "growl" lights. The lights only come on with you press the Turbo button, which boost CPU speed to 4.6GHz. The case has 3 fans including the power supply fan, and keeps the case cool enough. I don’t see room to add another fan. 2 USB 3.0 ports (with more in back) and headphone/microphone jacks are on front, also an SD card slot. At 36 lb. it would be nice to have a handle on top to pick it up. The Steelseries keyboard and mouse are configurable and built for gamers. Personally, I rarely custom program my keyboard or mouse buttons, and use a Microsoft Natural keyboard and trackball mouse anyway.

Software: The system comes with Windows 10 Home installed, and a couple trial packages like Microsoft Office, which you could get on the Internet anyway. It does have a proprietary program by Acer that monitors your system temp and performance though, which is nice. And an install file for Steam, which is appropriate on a gaming rig. Other than that, no bloatware that you have to delete from your desktop.

Alternatives: If you are shopping for a gaming PC, you might also want to consider these competitors for price and features:

CUK MSI Nightblade MI2 Gamer PC
CPU Solutions Intel i7 4.0Ghz Quad Core PC
Microtel AM8090 Liquid Cooling Gaming PC
6th Gen Gaming Desktop Computer
Digital Storm 3 (not sold by Amazon)
Maingear Drift (not sold by Amazon)

Or, you can still consider building your own system as well. There is a web site called PC Part Picker to design and buy your dream system. I created a comparable system to the Acer Predator G6 on the site myself, but with expandable motherboard to enable SLI and more CPU and memory options, and my favorite PC case by Cooler Master, and it came out to about 00. My username is cassb, and I think you can look up my builds there. Otherwise, this Acer Predator is a monster for whatever…

Verdict: It’s a great machine, just wish it could do SLI and was a little more future proof., December 23, 2015
So far so good with this rig.

1. Everything runs great
2. The overclocking button is handy and it does work well once you upgrade the driver (It instantly crashed the PC out of the box so I had to upgrade the driver).
3. The case is very cool
4. The expandable bay in the front is nice
5. The headset stand is a nice gesture but not very useful in practicality. The tower sits on the floor and the slide out stand is so low to the ground. If it was higher it would make more sense.
6. There is ZERO documentation on the motherboard. I’ve looked and looked and can’t find any specs or info on it. I can’t tell how future proof the motherboard is, for example.
7. Can’t do SLI with this rig, which is disappointing considering the type of rig this is supposed to be.
8. PSU seems decent.
9. The internal wiring is very messy. Also, the fan for the CPU hangs over the RAM slots, so if you want to add more RAM, you have to take off the side CPU fan to put in the RAM, which feels really sloppy.
10. The audio input / mic ports have a lot of static. Fairly sure it is an issue with the PSU actually.

Totally HOT out of the BOX!, January 19, 2016

Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Owned a Previous model of this computer for about 5 years, it had many problems. Could not find any English language information on this AG6-710 Gaming Desktop, but, watching many European language internet broadcasts I finally saw enough details to convince me to hit the ‘Order’ key.
Delivery was delayed by shipper due to coming too early in the day and requiring a signature (which I DID want to provide), didn’t want this Acer left on the porch. Finally came when I could sign my ‘John Hancock’, and despite delay, I was still happy. Due to size and weight, factory carton was simply placed inside another cardboard box and shipping label slapped on it, NO additional packing materials. That gave me pause and a bit of concern. HOWEVER, since unpack and set up, using a VSX 1020 audio amp with 7.1 surround-Infinity speaker set; & 1080P HD monitor display 32", this machine (Win 10 OS–new to me, I’ve been back in Win 7 teritory on previous model) IS a gaming Predator. Able to control cooling fans, and CPU speed +Turbo button on case! Nvidia 980 card- SUPER graphics in highest res I would normally use (1920 x 1080) runs smooth as silk. Included keyboard (back lighted keys, Adj. mouse both OUTSTANDING) Powers up (Win 10) in seconds, would have liked 32 GB RAM but so far, 16 no real operation limit that I have noticed. Also would have preferred 512 SSD, yet 2TB hard drive is plenty of space for game library. OS and links are fine on the 256 SSD card. Fan(s) a bit loud at max running to cool, but once emerced in a game, I do not even notice their sound. Not fond of earphones in game play, like the room rockin’ better in FPS & RPG’s. SO FAR NOTHING negative to report. Can’t figure out how to open the CPU case (which I have done on many other machines over the years to boost cooling via external fans) but this ‘beautiful beast’ (I used to be a tank commander) displaces heat rapidly on it’s own. I feel the CPU case external design (armor tread) ROCKS! Playing Dying Light – Far Cry 4 – Fallout 4 – many other older titles, ALL RUN PERFECT! Awaiting the latest Tomb Raider generation, which should not have any issues, based on performance I have seen over the last month from the AG6-710. Always play only against the ‘computer’ not any MMP online or co-ops, so I cannot comment on that style of gaming play or ability of this machine over the WW web server responce times, but in stand-alone to date, this machine, for the $$$$ is far and away better for PC gaming than any other I have seen. Have NOT used multi-screen either. Just me against the box! NO ISSUES thus far. Ask me in 6 months, if it’s still a toasty toy, I’ll report any variations to this review with this ACER, should they occur. B.F.G. out!
