fantastic for video playback no matter what the resolution or file type, and fan-free to boot!,

This is as low as I’d go, spec-wise, for a desktop video card. The real bottom-basement solutions, like the GeForce 210 or the ATI 5450/6450, sometimes have problems playing back 1080p video, so if you want a card that will absolutely, positively, play ANY video type, the GT610 with 1GB of memory is where to start. For gaming, the GT610 undoubtedly has problems, but I’m not at all interested in that.
Bonus: this card is fan-free (passive), which means you won’t hear it. It has HDMI out, which is sufficient, and the card can be adapted for low-profile cases. I went through 3 other cards (the aforementioned 210, 5450, and 6450) before I found this one. It’s the only one that flawlessly plays any video I throw at it, regardless of resolution or compression. For less than , that makes it a 5-star recommendation to me.

Don’t think you are getting a powerhouse and you will be fine. I was using on-board graphics in my HTPC and noticed that the computer was laboring a little to play a blu-ray. I popped this in, and there is no problem any more.

I had a Dell optiplex office PC off lease. It had a PCIe 1.0 slot on the motherboard available. This was for a slimline low profile PC, and the powersupply is non standard ATX and just 280 watts. I added this card, to revive the PC for normal home use. Worked perfect! Existing power supply was quite adequate, and the card can do so much more than the PCIe slot will allow for. Playing videos, watching TV through Media center, all done perfectly. Aero interface in Win 7 64 bit is perfect. The heat sink is stout however, and I had to modify it to fit inside the case. I removed the heatsink, and used a pneumatic grinder to remove 4 fins off the back of the heatsink. I monitored the card temp for a while, and as it runs cool all the time, I no longer monitor or worry about it.
