I’ve only played about six Nancy Drew games, but this one is my favorite so far. This game took a long time to finish, which is a huge plus to me — you really get your money’s worth, especially for this download! Yet I felt like the majority of the time, you could figure out what you were supposed to do next, without going too crazy. The graphics and music were great, and I really felt like the atmosphere was immersive; you get a taste of both traditional and modern Japan. This is one of the best atmospheres in a game that I’ve played in a long time.
There are a lot of puzzles, and some of the puzzles in this game were maddeningly difficult, which I kind of like because it gives you a real sense of accomplishment when you complete them, but it may drive some people crazy. In some areas you can explore, it’s so dark that sometimes it’s hard to see things that you should see or pick up. I kind of wish you had some daytime opportunities to explore. One thing to mention for sure is that some of this game could be really scary for younger players, I’d imagine. I am in my twenties and downloaded this out of nostalgia (my grandma would buy some of these games for me when I was a kid and I loved them), and there was one part that made both me and my husband jump and scream, even though we laughed really hard afterward. Keep in mind if you’re getting this for someone smaller! All in all, this may be my favorite game I’ve played so far. I have a soft spot for the older ones that I grew up with, but this one is the best newer game I’ve played before. I recommend it for the price for sure. Shadow at Water’s Edge is a gripping tale, with graphics that will make you want to visit Japan! I was hooked to the storyline right away. Here’s what I thought was best about the game:
Length of the game: Perfect! Took me almost 3 days to complete the game, and I spent most of my weekend over it!! Different endings: Based on your decisions toward the end of the game, your choices will end the story in 2 different ways. Best to save the game as you keep progressing. Fear factor: This game definitely caught me off guard a couple of time. It was not as scary as Curse of Blackmoor Manor (a highly recommended game of Nancy Drew fans! Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor – PC). But scary nevertheless. If you enjoy horror, then this game will not disappoint. Rich Cultural Background: The storyline tried to incorporate the various cultural beliefs of the Japanese people. Whether it was puzzles, errands (Bento boxes!), or regular conversations, Japanese norms and cultural systems were seamlessly integrated for a comprehensive gaming experience. Price: For , the game was a steal, and the download was pretty fast. I would highly recommend downloading the game over buying the CD And here’s what could have been improved in the game: Easy puzzles: While I enjoyed the puzzles a lot, they were pretty easy compared to previous games. Predictable ending: Halfway through the game, you will have a pretty good idea of who the culprit(s) is/are. If there were more characters or a few more scenarios, this issue could be prevented. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable game. I love ND games that take you to a new country and immerse you in its culture. Shadow’s edge was a perfect blend of mystery and fun. Definitely Dare to Play!

Scary, Challenging Fun!,

Shadow at the Water’s Edge has a beautiful setting in an old Japanese ryokan, and the characters have tons of personality. This took me about 3 days to finish and was tricky enough that I needed a little help from online to walkthroughs to get unstuck.
As usual, there are lots of puzzles, and you need to do a lot of snooping and taking of others’ belongings to progress the game, but if you put things back where you found them after you’re done using them, you get a trophy at the end of the game. CAUTION if you startle easily you will definitely get scared. I nearly jumped out of my skin a couple times. The game downloaded and installed in about 20 minutes with high-speed wifi. I’d absolutely recommend this game, it was very entertaining! |
