Complete Review of DOOM, May 13, 2016

First off for those of you that were able to experience the beta the final release version is very much improved. Overall the gameplay is very smooth. 4 hours in and the game has already exceeded my post beta expectations. The shooting and QTE finishers are very satisfying. I will not ruin the gameplay but I will say that the story is a direct omage to the original doom. Im not going to bore you with a long and drawn out review of the game but I will say that this is well worth a buy. If you are a fan of the previous doom series then this will likely be your new favorite. The graphics are a little disappointing but ID graphics engine hasn’t quite been up to par for quite some time so this is top be expected. I will say though the graphics by no means are poor just a tad washed out IMO. The game play is very fast paced so if you are one that likes to take things slow then you may not enjoy the game. Much like the multiplayer beta the entire game is fast with tons of in your face action. You will have no problem spending hours on end enjoying the content of the game.

Everything I had expected and more, May 16, 2016

If you loved the original Doom series, you’ll love this game. They’ve done a fantastic job of keeping that creepy, hellish experience that will leave you second guessing whats over in the next isle at the grocery store later. There’s a nice balance between running for your life, or figuring out what objectives you need to open this door. Unlike the original Doom where you could pick apart areas a little at a time, this requires you to get dirty and fight mixed groups of monsters in full on assault mode. Cowards need not apply

If your looking for another call of duty shooter, or expect to compare it to call of duty, you might not like this. Its not an ownage and bragging rights kind of game. Many monsters take a lot of effort to bring down, and you’re forced to use an array of weapons to fit the current situation. You can’t sneak around killing everything with headshots or camp the corners. This is more like pit brawling

I would like to see more maps with less length, than a handful of extremely long maps. That’s just personal preference. I ‘m also not a huge fan of the common "Area lockdown" scenarios where your flight option is taken away and there’s no where to safe harbor yourself for a minute.

Unlike other posts, I didn’t find the save points uncommon or inconvenient. If you win a major fight, clear a certain area or complete a major objective, you always get a checkpoint. The only time this would cost you 10 minutes of your time is if you decided to run around and collect items from previous areas before trying again.

Reading other posts, I agree with this comment: It doesn’t give me that "I can’t wait to get home and play" feeling. I thought about why, and for me its the "Area lockdown" scenarios. They’re hard until you adjust to a brawling playstyle, they are stressful and they are common. Thus I never look forward to them, and I’d rather take a break than open that door.

The download from steam did take four hours. I suspect that was because of launch day. I can’t really complain about that because every PS4 game we’ve bought this year does the same thing. Nothing has been playable out of the box.

The story line is "suitably interesting" if you require one. I’m not a fan of made up words and terminology though. Lazarus wave.. argent energy… triotechnogeoriftfilter what? You cannot scientifically explain "a portal to hell opening and corrupting the humans nearby, turning them into hells army" so don’t try

50 gigs is a huge hit to the hard drive, considering that SSD’s are relatively smaller than their mechanical cousins. I didn’t have the space on my primary SSD drive, so I had to throw in a mechanical. Loading screens take several minutes. I’ve bought a new PCIE SSD card that should be significantly faster than my primary SSD and I plan to move my games to it as a remedy to the situation. Because its a STEAM download, it didn’t give me many options on where to store it either. As an afterthought, I may have been able to install it all to a large USB stick and run the game off that, which would still be faster than the mechanical.

As a reference, I’m running an i5-3570, GeForce 750 and 16gb DDR3 1600 without any problems

As you might notice from my account name, I like gaming. A lot. I won’t waste time comparing this Doom with Dooms of old because gaming has changed an awful lot since this franchise launched.

Doom 2016 is a solid shooter. It works great at launch, which sadly is not to be taken for granted lately. The single player, which I am still playing through, is well done, quick paced, and satisfying. I have also been greatly enjoying the multiplayer. I am so sick of future warfare online shooters that I could vomit. This is a nice mix of old-school and new-school and I like it.

Many of the one-star reviews here are complaining not of game play, but the delivery method of the game, which is basically the Steam code, which downloads the game. There is a disc, but I didn’t even put it in because I already knew there was a massive patch download. I can’t say the complaints are unfounded, with data caps and slow internet speeds, it is certainly frustrating. I too must question the wisdom of my game, which I tracked from Texas to my home in California. Why bother shipping an online code at all?

In any event, weird delivery logistics aside, the game play is great and worth a look.

UPDATED JUNE 11 2016:

The multiplayer was patched to balance some weapons better, and decrease the time between matches, which has made the multiplayer even better. I like the continued support of this game. I also forgot to mention Snapmap support, which allows user-made single player and multiplayer maps, which increases the variety of the game.
