Classic motion-control dance game that’s much improved over the 2015 version and the 2016 Wii version, October 23, 2015
By
Gaming.Fit (New York, NY USA) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii U (Video Game)

While I was less than impressed with the Wii version of Just Dance 2016, I have to say I was much more impressed with the Wii U version. Here are some of the highlights.

1) Option to Use a Smartphone as a Controller

As on the Xbox One and PS4, you now have the option of using your smartphone as a controller. If you choose this option a QR code will appear on the screen; scan it and you’ll be sent to the iTunes or Google Play Store to download a free app called "Just Dance Controller". Your phone and console need to be on the same WiFi network. It might take a little trial and error, but once your phone connects it immediately becomes a "second screen" you can use to navigate the menu you see on your TV screen. You can use either your phone or the Wii remote to navigate the menus. Granted, this is a little less of a novelty for Wii U users, as we already had a second screen in the Gamepad. But this actually frees up the Gamepad to serve as a video camera so you can participate in the new video features.

During gameplay your phone also becomes a controller that works exactly the same as the Wii remote–you hold it in your right hand, dance, and pray that it doesn’t come flying out of your hand. Again, not as much an advantage for Wii U users as for Xbox One or PS4 users, but one immediate benefit is that you can support up to six players vs. four with just the Wii remote.

As for its accuracy, I’d say its comparable to the Wii remote, if a little more forgiving. I tried dancing to the same song and got 3 stars using the Wii remote and 4 stars using my smartphone.

2) Better graphics

In the past it seemed that the Wii U version would just port over identical graphics from the Wii version. But here, you can see that the artwork has been redone to take advantage of the superior graphics capabilities of the Wii U

3) Updated playlist with multiple options for choreography

As with previous versions of Just Dance, songs are choreographed for a single dancer, a duo, a trio, or a quartet; as anyone who’s played a routine involving multiple dancers knows it can be really fun to play as well as to watch. Here are the songs in Just Dance 2016, the artist, and the choreography for each:

All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor (1,2)
Animals – Martin Garrix (1,2)
Balkan Blast Remix – Angry Birds (4)
Blame – Calvin Harris Ft. John Newman (1)
Born This Way – Lady Gaga (1,3)
Boys (Summertime Love) – The Lemon Cubes (3)
Chiwawa – Wanko Ni Mero Mero (1)
Circus – Britney Spears (1,4)
Cool For The Summer – Demi Lovato (1)
Copacabana – Frankie Bostello (4)
Drop the Mambo – Diva Carmina (1)
Fancy – Iggy Azalea Ft. Charli XCX (1,3)
Fun – Pitbull Ft. Chris Brown (1)
Gibberish – MAX (2)
Hangover (BaBaBa) – Buraka Som Sistema (2)
Heartbeat Song – Kelly Clarkson (1)
Hey Mama – Daid Guetta Ft. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha & Afrojack (3)
Hit The Road Jack – Charles Percy (2,3)
I Gotta Feeling – The Black Eyed Peas (1,2)
I’m An Albatroz – AronChupa (1)
Ievan Polkka – Hatsune Miku (1)
Irish Meadow Dance – O’Callaghan’s Orchestra (4)
Junto a Ti – Disney’s "Violetta" (3)
Kaboom Pow – Nikki Yanofsky (1)
Kool Kontact – Glorious Black Belts (2)
Let’s Groove – Equinox Stars (3)
Lights – Ellie Goulding (1)
No Control – One Direction (4)
Rabiosa – Shakira Fr. El Cata (1)
Same Old Love – Selena Gomez (3)
Stadium Flow – Imposs (1)
Stuck on a Feeling – Prince Royce (1)
Teacher – Nick Jonas (1,2)
The Choice is Yours – Darius Dante Van Dijk (1)
These Boots Are Made for Walking – The Girly Team (1)
This is How We Do – Katy Perry (1,4)
Under The Sea – Disney’s "The Little Mermaid" (1)
Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson Ft. Bruno Mars (1,3)
Want To Want Me – Jason Derulo (1,2)
When The Rain Begins To Fall – Sky Trucking (2)
William Tell Overture – Rossini (2)
You’re the One That I Want – From The Movie Grease (2)
You Never Can Tell – A. Caveman & The Backseats (2)

4) Use of the Wii U Gamepad

While it might seem that using your phone as a controller and second screen makes the Wii U Gamepad obsolete, the truth is that the Gamepad still has multiple uses. The main use is as a camera and microphone. Specifically, you place the unit in front of you so it has your full body shot and the system will automatically record you when you’re dancing and/or singing.

Be forewarned that the system will record you without you knowing in what it calls "AutoDance", but…

JD fan who loves the new JD, obv. Couple of gripes., October 29, 2015
Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii U (Video Game)
Nutwiisystem.Com’s review pretty much covers it, but there are some things I want to add and emphasize.
First of all, I’ve been a huge fan of JD and I’ve actually been kind of bummed by JD 2014 and 2015 content wise.
So obviously, I’m going to like this game BUT I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking it! It’s a new favourite, that is for sure. Lots of replay-ability, and a good majority of the choreographies are fun. It’s actually kinda difficult to decide on which ones I want to dance to in my free time.

Now let’s get critical:
I honestly thought this game was rated T. Being a visually impaired adult I don’t really bother to look at ratings anymore, and JD games have generally been safe to play around impressionable children.
Weeeelll. . . while certain words are censored, you can still get a pretty clear picture of what is going on when you listen to the lyrics, be it sex or objectifying people.
It could fly over a kids’ head much like some of Aqua’s songs and "Cottoneye Joe" did when we were little, but I’m not totally sure about that.
I, for one, am uncomfortable having some of the tracks play around kids, whether they understand it or not.
I would advise giving the songs a listen (go to youtube or something), before getting this if it’s for a child or if you’re planning to play in a family setting. Decide from there!

Last point is about the "Unlimited" pass. I think it’s great because not all JD games are on the WiiU, and so I was looking forward to playing some old favourites! Fortunately this game comes with a 48 hr free trial! Yay! A better option, I think, than getting the "Gold Edition" and then finding out you’ve got issues, or don’t like it as much as you thought you would.
Problems I ran into, probably due to rural internet:
Buffering in the middle of a song
Graphics quality would get reeeeally low sometimes, to the point you can’t see what is happening (but on the upside, when quality would go up, I could see the older songs got remastered! No more fuzzy dancers! )
Loading seemed to take FOREVER . . . sometimes I just quit waiting

Coming to think of it, I’m not sure if this is a slow ‘net issue, or an ubisoft server issue. . . but yeah. Free trial so you can find out. :’)

Update 22/03/2016:

I ended up getting the unlimited pass and I’ve really enjoyed it for the past two months.
New songs get added every so often. Some oldies and at least one newbie.
I noticed the connection is the worst over the weekend and in the evenings. . . which is probably when everyone else is trying to play.
Therefore if you can only play in the evening, you’ll likely be dealing with ubisoft’s server issues.
If you can play whenever, middle of the day is good. I found mornings to be the best.

Best one yet!, November 8, 2015
By

This review is from: Just Dance 2016 – Wii U (Video Game)
This is the best Just Dance yet! I have been dancing to Just Dance for a few years now and they seem to get better with each new title. This one has a lot of great songs on it including artists like Britney Spears, the Black Eyed Peas, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and more. Most of the songs are performed by the real artists unlike in the past where you would sometimes have cover bands. The dances are fun, although some can be a little complicated in certain areas of the song. For example during "All About That Bass" the figure has a complicated move that involves a lot of hand/arm movements during certain parts of the song. It is complicated because it happens so quickly that I have a hard time keeping up but after doing is for two weeks now, I have just about got that move down.

I love the fact that I can choose as many (or as few) songs as I like to work out with during the ‘sweat’ feature. As you choose the songs you want the game adds up the total time so you always know the length of your workout. It also lets you know how many calories you have burned at the end of each song with the total amount burned when you complete the session. Another thing I like, which was also on past Just Dance games, is the fact that you can pause during a song. Sometimes I there is an unexpected interruption and I like that I can pause the song, take care of whatever it is, and then come back to it and finish my workout.

In the package you get a code so you can try out a new feature for 48 hours called Just Dance Unlimited. This new feature is having access to all the previous Just Dance songs (150 tracks) on this game. This is my favorite feature by far. Now I can choose from all the Just Dance songs and don’t have to be stuck with a certain Just Dance game or constantly putting in different disks. After your 48 hour trial runs out you have the option of continuing on for a period of time of your choosing by purchasing extended time. You have the option of purchasing per month, per three months, or even a years worth of service.

Another new feature is the add on feature of using a smart phone as a controller. The game will ask you at the beginning of each session if you want to use a smartphone or the Wii controller. If you choose to use a smart phone, you will need to download the "Just Dance Controller" app and following the instructions. This feature allows you to add more people to the fun. Usually you only have 4 players but this feature allows you to add 2 more players for a total of 6.

One of the options you can choose from on the startup screen is called ‘Dance Quest’. During this option you get to show off your skills completing against other players ranging from beginner to dance master level depending on what you choose. You dance to three songs and prizes are awarded for the top 3 players. You start out with the ‘Cake Quest’ then unlocked other quests as you go along. Each new quest gives you 3 new songs to compete.

You also get the World Challenge which I always think is a lot of fun. You get to compete with other people playing the game all around the world. You are all playing at the exact same time so it is so much fun trying to win it all for the U.S. and get bragging rights.

There are a lot of other features to numerous to mention without making this review so long that you quit reading. Suffice it to say this game is loaded and a ton of fun. Overall I feel that this is the best Just Dance yet and highly recommend it. 5 stars!

If you find my review useful please let me know and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them below and I will answer them as quickly as possible. Thank you for checking out my review. 🙂
